How To Create A Fabulous Statement Powder Room

I love designing fancy modern mudrooms - they are as beautiful as they are functional!
M
udrooms are all the rage these days! In the past several years I’ve designed dozens of beautiful and practical mudrooms for client’s homes and they are so much fun to create! Everyone loves how great mudrooms enhance their homes and their lives. Mudrooms make it easy to keep shoes, bags, coats and winter accessories contained and somewhat organized in one beautifully styled place…it’s no wonder they’ve become so popular! I’m sharing my process below on how I create the perfect mudroom and have also included some photos of my recent mudroom designs. The photo of the mudroom I designed at the top of this post was a finalist in 2018 Westchester Home Magazine’s Best Mudroom Design category ☺
Naturally, the first step in my process is to determine the best location in my client’s home for the mudroom. Typically it’s the area next to a side door or garage door entrance, for obvious reasons. If I’m working on a renovation, I’ve often removed a cumbersome coat closet or relocated a washer/dryer to accommodate the new mudroom area. This opens up the area tremendously and allows for the installation of my mudroom cabinetry unit.

The left photo shows the closet and tight entryway before my renovation. The right photo shows my finished design...much more functional, open and beautiful!
Next, I measure the space to draw accurate plans and elevations so we know how big the unit will be. A meeting with my clients is also needed at this time to discuss what features they would like in the unit. Normally it will include a bench with shoe storage underneath, chic hooks for coats and bags, cubbies with cool baskets and/or cabinets above.Once the various details are hashed out with clients, I will draw the design of the built-ins so they can be quoted by my carpenters. The drawings will also note the color and finish of the unit. The most popular color these days are definitely gray or white!
Once the unit design is approved by my clients and has gone into production in my workshop, I’m ready to shop for fabrics, chic hooks, baskets, or any other accessories that will be going into the unit. I love adding a comfy bench seat cushion in a durable faux leather or outdoor fabric and pretty throw pillows, of course! You can also show off your personality in the other design elements in the room such as paint colors or wallpaper, flooring, rugs, lighting, cabinet hardware, etc.. It’s a fun space to use interesting textures and patterns and let your style show through. These days, people are really dressing up their mudrooms and spending a lot of time and money to make them just as beautiful as the rest of their home!

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about my process to design a great mudroom! Let me know in the comments section below and happy designing!
